AI general applications

The general applications of AI

Advanced algorithms can help draft and augment business models based on thousands of business cases and unique conditions that are relevant to the specific organization.
For example, AI can be used to radically improve marketing and customer service, and to optimize chain management.
Several businesses, governmental institutions, and academic institutions are already using AI to improve operations and value. All new organizational business models will need to take AI into account and capitalize on the great opportunities it can bring. This will enable them to continuously change and adapt to remain competitive in the current wave of fast technological and societal transformation. Worldwide examples include companies like Netflix, Airbnb, Facebook, Google, Amazon, Smart Finance and Uber.
To get a deeper insight into the use of AI in real-life situations, we are presenting below a few companies which are using AI in their everyday activities.

Real-world AI use

To give you an overview of the range of AI applicability, find below a selection of cases and best practices of real-world AI use within companies:

ARUTEC has begun to introduce AI in the business line related to process automation. Specifically, with a process that begins any design   process for the manufacture of any mechanical installation: reading the Principle Diagrams (P&ID). A Principle Diagram is a drawing (pdf) that contains the Diagram with the representation of the items necessary to develop an engineering solution designed to manufacture a mechanical installation.

Bilbolaget Bollnäs (The car company in Bollnäs) is a car dealer of the brands Volvo,
Renault and Dacia. A complete solution for car ownership is offered here. This includes financing as well as insurance solutions. AI is used in its operations to optimise troubleshooting, repair and service needs. AI is also used for targeted marketing. There is also a glass workshop, tire hotel and repair shop, as well as a petrol station.

An innovative corporation called Smart Finance uses AI to assess over 5,000 personal features from all      the data that are available to assess creditworthiness and risk     assessment. By contrast, a conventional bank only assesses a fraction   of those parameters. One of the parameters Smart Finance uses in   assessing the application is by quantifying the history of the phone   battery. According to them, a lower percentage of charge on a phone battery is an indication of a higher risk of defaulting on the loan. Another interesting parameter they use is how confident the user is while filling in the application process. Assessing and making decisions that affect humans may not always align with what AI deems important.

A study within which AI has been used, at the University of Ontario in which telemetry from devices attached to premature babies in neonatal intensive care was analyzed in real-time. The systems  predicted, with a high degree of accuracy, when a premature infant was developing an infection. Even though clinical  symptoms did not present themselves until 48 hours later. The  researchers and clinicians still do not know HOW the machine identified the onset of infection. But in this case, the important point was that it COULD. Ultimately, the team had to be comfortable working and acting on correlation, without fully understanding the causal relationship.

Best practices

  • The use of AI is already beneficially influencing the activities of many businesses, governmental and academic institutions.

Depending on the nature of the performed activities, the processes they use, vary as it can be seen below:
    1. Recommendation algorithms. The recommendation engines behind Netflix and YouTube suggestions, what information appears on your Facebook feed, and product recommendations are fueled by machine learning.

    2. Image analysis and object detection. Machine learning can analyse images for different information, like learning to identify people and tell them apart — though facial recognition algorithms are controversial. Businesses use for this vary.

    3. Fraud detection. Machines can analyse patterns, like how much someone normally spends or where they normally shop, to identify potentially fraudulent credit card transactions, log-in attempts, or spam emails.

    4. Manufacturers are applying machine learning to identify potential equipment failures just in time, before they happen. This requires fitting equipment with sensors and embedding analytic sensing systems. It also precipitates a fundamental rethink of customer service, maintenance and warranty policies and procedures.
