What is AI? AI history and evolution

Other areas of the subject

In order to understand the development of AI purely historically, there are certain areas that border on the subject.

Computer science and information processing are the basics of information and calculations performed by computers using software. It is computer scientists who practice and develop this knowledge.

The word ”algorithm” often comes up when talking about ways to calculate data and an algorithm is basically a series of instructions/questions that with the answer 1=yes or the answer 0=no solve a question.

AI belongs to computer science and is part of machine learning. Machine learning is a system that can improve its task automatically, based on experience and programming.

Today, researchers often use a large amount of collected data, so called Deep Learning, in order to solve large and complex mathematical problems. This type of machine learning requires large capacity and modern computers.

An even newer concept is Data Science and it aims at more accurate machine learning, where statistics, algorithms, data management and web applications are the major areas of use.
In recent times, Robotics has grown into a billion dollar industry and it is believed that steps into homes are on their way in the near future. But the creation of machines that can act humanly in the real world is a big challenge and it depends on all areas of AI.

See more details about these concepts in Module 3, AI general applications.

General intelligence, or the G-factor

General intelligence can be defined as general mental ability that underlies specific mental skills related to areas such as spatial, numerical, mechanical, and verbal abilities. These abilities allow people to acquire knowledge and solve problems.

General intelligence influences performance on all cognitive tasks, it helps you see around corners, and then make the right decisions.

If we are to be able to encode the General Intelligence, or the G-factor as it is called in these contexts, do we have to create a machine that has cognitive ability, can take in spatial sense, shows understanding of numbers, is able to solve mechanical problems as well as having verbal abilities, the human mental abilities that help us see around corners, and then make the right decision.

Are we there today? The future will tell.
